In less than a month, the Tasmanian government is expected to table its order to approve the construction of the Macquarie Point stadium in Hobart.
It means that after years of public debate and a damning planning assessment that resulted in a recommendation it not proceed, the fate of the stadium rests in the hands of the state’s politicians.
Last time the Liberal government tried to approve the stadium, it controversially planned to use enabling legislation — with lots of conditions attached.
This time, it will be in the form of an “order”, and it’s important that it gets it right (in the eyes of those who support it) because, unlike legislation, the order cannot be amended once it is tabled in parliament.
So who will vote which way and what is the chance it will actually get up?
