Dear Ms Brown and Mr Winter,
I am a voter in the Franklin electorate. I write to you both to demand that the Tasmanian Labor Party do better.
Your party has completely lost its way and its elected members are not performing effectively as an Opposition - at the very time in our state’s history when that role is crucial. At the very time the government is wanting to use any means possible to push through the biggest waste of money in Tasmania’s history: the Rockliff stadium.
The Tasmanian Labor Opposition lacks focus, purpose, integrity and consistency in its response to a new stadium at Macquarie Point.
Your State members and candidates proudly distributed NO STADIUM bumper stickers and criticised the project in countless media releases, pointing out the myriad reasons why it should not proceed. Your Federal colleagues backed you, reminding the other major party of your position (e.g. Senator Bilyk to Senator Duniam: “ … I'm disappointed to hear you say that the state Labor Party haven't put their position or that they support it. They do not, and have been very clear for months that they don't support it.” - Hansard 28 Nov 2022).
You promised to renegotiate the Team Agreement with the AFL. That policy was spot on.
After Tasmanian voters elected a Parliament that would oppose the stadium, you then betrayed us - and we will not forget that.
Your post-election “jobs, jobs, jobs” talking points are indefensible. While Tasmanian public sector workers are already the object of efficiency dividends to pay for a stadium, the erstwhile party of the workers is aligning itself with big business and the gambling industry to spruik for jobs we all know will, in the main, fall to mainlanders working under the aegis of a Tier 1 construction company from the north island. And this is in the knowledge of the many alternative proposals for the site that could deliver real jobs to real Tasmanians.
You have been in lockstep with the Liberal government, ignoring the evidence of experts like Saul Eslake, Dr Nicholas Gruen and now the Tasmanian Planning Commission, as well as the wishes of the people. We voted against a new stadium at the 2024 State Election, with more than 60% of primary votes going to candidates who’d declared their opposition to a new stadium in their campaign material. Yet you betrayed us.
Your “we are holding the government to account” mantra is the biggest betrayal of all. You are choosing to stand by, playing politics, while our state’s budgetary position grows daily worse, just so that, one day, you can say “we told you so”.
I ask that you take immediate steps to educate yourself as to the role of an Opposition in the Westminster system.
Together, you and the other Labor members have the power to stop this farce now.
If you do want to consider this issue thoroughly, you can read the Our Place - Hobart article that prompted me to write to you. It’s time for Tasmanian Labor to step up and be a real Opposition.
If you can’t see your way clear to do that, you’ll likely receive even fewer votes, and certainly fewer preferences, next election.
Yours faithfully,
