New statewide polling has found an overwhelming majority of Tasmanians want the Premier to be honest about the true cost of the proposed Macquarie Point stadium, with 74.4% agreeing full costs should be disclosed to Parliament and the public.

Half of those polled believe the government has handled the stadium poorly — and the political fallout is already showing. Labor’s primary vote has collapsed to 18.3%, down 7.6 points from its 2025 election result of 25.9%, with the party’s continued backing of the project a key factor.

Our Place – Hobart spokesperson Roland Browne said the polling reveals that Tasmanians are not buying the government’s secrecy on stadium costs, with a massive 74.4% of respondents wanting the true cost revealed.

“Given this project is now looking to cost between $2 billion and $2.5 billion*, including interest, according to the latest estimate, people rightfully want to know what the Premier has got us into.”

“While it’s the Premier’s pet sport project, it’s our money — and it’s our education system, our health services, our museum staff and our police officers that are now being, and will continue to be, cut to pay for it.”

The government must disclose the true cost of the stadium, and the loan costs, without further delay.

* The $2–2.5 billion estimate draws on Dr Nicholas Gruen’s June 2026 report, which found the stadium’s cost will blow out to at least $1.5 billion with $460 million in interest in the best case, and over $1.75 billion plus around $700 million in interest over 10 years in the worst case.
