Introduction by Croakey: More than 100 Tasmanian doctors have signed an open letter opposing the proposed Macquarie Point AFL stadium in nipaluna/Hobart, warning the project would place serious strain on the state’s already fragile finances and health system.
The intervention comes ahead of the state election on 19 July. Below, retired GP Dr Clare Smith, a climate health advocate, explains why she signed the letter, which is expected to be published by The Mercury newspaper this coming weekend.
“The Macquarie Point stadium is a sordid tale of deals made behind closed doors, without discussion in Cabinet or with the state Treasury, and unrepentant resistance to all cries for meaningful public scrutiny,” she writes.
