Is using Mac Point for a stadium the right choice for Hobart?

“I don’t think this is the right choice, due to the proposed location and the current budget. I was the only staff member who went with elected members to meet the AFL. We asked them to rethink the deal for the Devils team. If the government keeps going with the stadium at Macquarie Point, Hobart City Council must work with the state government and the Macquarie Point Development Corporation. They must make the stadium work as well as it can for Hobart and Tasmania. I don’t like the idea, but if elected, that could be my responsibility.”

Mike Dutta

Is using Mac Point for a stadium the right choice for Hobart?

“Mac Point is too valuable a city asset to be dominated by the stadium. Hobart needs housing, public space, cultural hub etc. It should be developed for the long term of the whole community. The Tasmanian Planning Commission recommended against the project. The stadium is going to cost far more then what the government has told the people of Tas.”

Bill Harvey

Tasmanian Greens

Is using Mac Point for a stadium the right choice for Hobart?

“There’s no doubt that a Tassie team is much supported, but the stadium at Mc Point has divided the community. It’s absolutely the wrong place. Using existing stadiums would not have caused this rift and we could have all been proud of our entry into the AFL. Really poor decision making from the state government allowing this to disaster occur.”

Ryan Posselt

Australian Labor Party

Is using Mac Point for a stadium the right choice for Hobart?

“Building a very large structure in a constrained site like Macquarie point won’t get the best result even if we must have a stadium. It may degrade the heritage and tourism value of the IXL complex, Hunter Street and Constitution Dock. An area unique to Hobart and area that makes us special.”

Harvey Lennon

Independent

Is using Mac Point for a stadium the right choice for Hobart?

“The decision has been made and preliminary works appear to be underway. I had my own views as Chair of the TSO. Now my interest is how do we get the best outcome for our City and the people of Hobart and that will require Council engaging fully with MPDC and the State Government. I’m particularly interested in traffic implications and transport solutions and I’m ready to get to work to achieve the best outcome for Hobart’s ratepayers.”

Louise Bloomfield

Liberal

“I was disappointed how it impacted the cenotaph, but this is not something the Hobart City Council can influence. Deliberate activism works will increase costs to ratepayers which is in my view the wrong thing to do. What we can do however is broker better infrastructure investment in our city as a result – such as parking and stormwater.”

“While council has lost the fight there still remains unresolved questions about the suitability of reclaimed land, traffic access and egress as well as parking while shuttle buses would bring some supporters to the ground this is only moving traffic issues to other areas around Hobart, I would like to see a light rail proposal put forward either by state government or private enterprise within the current rail corridor I would support this if proposed.”

Sam Campbell

Lutruwita Socialist Alliance

Is using Mac Point for a stadium the right choice for Hobart?

“No, not in its current form. But the Macquarie Point Vision initiative by Our Place? Yes! As a project of State Significance it should be put to a plebiscite to determine if Tasmanians actually want it, and if so in what form. Ironically I originally supported the stadium, but slowly all the things that mattered to me were stripped away… So I was pleased to learn of the Macquarie Point Vision which I can support!”

Trevor Connor

Independent

Is using Mac Point for a stadium the right choice for Hobart?

“I only say no, as the lack of any suitable public transport makes the location unsuitable. Three things need to happen, extended ferry services, reintroduction of trains and revert Davey and Macquarie streets to two way. This is a circa 1965 plan when population was 120,00, it is now 250,000.”

Ben Lohberger

Independent

Is using Mac Point for a stadium the right choice for Hobart?

“The stadium will be ruinously expensive and is completely unnecessary given that we already have two AFL stadiums. I’m also very concerned about the government trying to shift the costs of pedestrian infrastructure for the stadium onto Hobart City Council ratepayers, and I will resist any attempt to do so. Hobart’s ratepayers should not have to subsidise this government’s incompetence.”

Zelinda Sherlock

Tasmanian Greens

Is using Mac Point for a stadium the right choice for Hobart?

“I have consistently held this view. I attended the Tasmanian Planning Commission hearings and stand by the City’s endorsed opposition to the Mac Point stadium. I also vehemently rejected the AEC economic modelling presented to Council, particularly its use of expenditure switching, which assumes no budget constraint on residents. As Professor Peter Phibbs’ analysis of the AEC report highlighted:
1. A stadium does not create additional household income.
2. Modelling relied on a national input-output model without primary Hobart data and
3. Assumed no supply-side constraints, effectively suggesting the stadium could be built without displacing activity elsewhere in the construction sector.”

“Yes Team, No New Stadium.”

Angus Templeton

Is using Mac Point for a stadium the right choice for Hobart?

“The stadium is a terrible idea, but as long as it’s going ahead, I’m going to use it to push for light rail as much as I can.”

Cameron Brumby

Independent

Is using Mac Point for a stadium the right choice for Hobart?

“Building the stadium is better than building nothing – which will be the case if it doesn’t go ahead, the site would sit as an industrial wasteland for the next decade+ whilst we forever debate its use! its been greenlit – time to accept it – and its our job to ensure the best version of it can happens.”

AJ Humphries

Tasmanian Greens

Is using Mac Point for a stadium the right choice for Hobart?

“I’m excited about what the Devils AFL side will bring to our state and the opportunities they will create for kids growing up here. Maybe we can even draft a few new players into the Ramona’s side for the Reclink Cup! The Macquarie Point Stadium has been approved and early works are underway. My priority, if elected as a local councillor, is ensuring the project integrates well with the River Derwent and the city’s urban fabric. I also want to see strong project management, transparent decision-making, budget accountability, and the timely delivery of supporting transport and public infrastructure.”

Debra Thurley

“I actually preferred the Stadium location presented by Dean Coleman but for reasons I assume related to revenue/funds generated going to private investors Mac Point has been the Government’s chosen site.”

Why is the stadium an issue for Hobart City Council candidates?

Voting for NO STADIUM candidates is still important for HCC. The “it’s all over and we just need to make it work” is not the line we are looking for from candidates.

First, while the proposed stadium has been approved, there is no signed contract for construction, and the cost has blown out by some $350m. That’s $350m Tasmania does not have on top of the existing cost to Tasmania of $875m. Which Tasmania also does not have. And we don’t have the money to pay the interest on the loans, either. The stadium, even if contracts are signed and construction starts, will suffocate the state’s economy.

HCC is responsible for Hobart’s amenity and services, which will suffer massively if the stadium proceeds. No councillor can validly promise to make the best of a project that will ruin Sullivans Cove, disrespect the Cenotaph, trample Aboriginal wishes, cause massive traffic and parking problems, and squander what is unquestionably the best open waterfront site in Australia.

Candidates ought to aim to be on the right side of history and oppose this unfunded, unwanted developing disaster.

What’s the most effective way to use my vote?

We acknowledge the expertise of Kevin Bonham who recommends voters number every box to get the full benefit of preferential voting. It might be hard to number any box for a prominent member of the pro-stadium cult but it might be your vote that makes the difference when the final preferences are distributed. Dr Bonham covers this in his very useful guide to these HCC elections:

Read Kevin Bonham’s article here

We encourage votes for candidates who want to deliver a Mac Point site with amenities for all Tasmanians, while AFL is played at existing grounds. We encourage votes for candidates who believe in a sustainable and liveable city, integrity in local government and proper planning processes. And we encourage votes for candidates who will not be bullied by corporate and government interests.

Where can I learn more about the candidates?

We recommend that, when reading the survey results, you ensure that the candidate’s comments are consistent with their declared position.

Where candidates have failed to respond, we are legally unable to report their position but we have serious doubts about their level of commitment to democratic process or to a liveable people-friendly city. For all candidates, where available, we have included links to their public sites where you can find more information about them.

We encourage you to do your own homework. And we recommend that, where you are considering parking your vote with a candidate who will stand with us on the stadium question, you take the time to find out more about their other views. Our campaign is about a stadium but we would not encourage people to vote for NO STADIUM candidates who hold other policy positions likely to cause harm to Tasmanian communities or individuals. Remember the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party? They were NO STADIUM for a while.
