We respectfully acknowledge the Muwinina people as traditional custodians of the land upon which Greater Hobart is built.

They knew Macquarie Point as Nipaluna.

We recognise that the renaming of this place after the Governor of New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land, who was known for ordering violent reprisals against Aboriginal people, constitutes a profound disrespect for the continuing relationship of Tasmanian Aboriginal people with their ancestral country.

We support the vision of Tasmanian Aboriginal people to create a Truth and Reconciliation Park at the heart of the Macquarie Point precinct as a way of healing the trauma of dispossession and genocide, and of celebrating the resilience and generosity of Tasmanian Aboriginal culture.
