Our Place – Hobart has responded to recent news reports on the Mac Point stadium project. Spokesperson Roland Browne said:
It doesn’t matter how many announcements the Premier makes for sports hubs or housing or training hubs at Mac Point, or for transport projects.
There is simply not enough money for this stadium project. It’s time to change course.
We know with certainty the project cost has dwarfed the September 2025 figure of $1.13 billion, even after the government has stripped the project back to be nothing more than walls and a roof.
With the Federal government confirming there is no more money for the project, and the state government promising to contribute no more than $875 million, the project cannot proceed. The fact is, the government is at least $300 million – $500 million short (before we account for interest on the loan). And the AFL won’t be helping out the Premier; that much is clear.
That 74% of the population want the cost of the project revealed shows people – including stadium supporters – are seeing through the Premier’s charm campaign. They want the truth.
We are not stupid. We know how bad things are. We know our government is hiding the project cost and the State’s terrible economic position. The bond markets are in turmoil, the cost of fuel is increasing rapidly and Tasmania will almost certainly face another credit downgrade in November (making interest payments even more costly). As recently as July this year Tasmania’s economy was described as “woeful” by Deloitte, and the CBA lists it as Australia’s worst performing economy. Another $1.5 billion of debt and consequent interest payments will push Tasmania’s position from dire to catastrophic.
It is time to change course.
