Our Place – Hobart announces it is holding a ‘Save Tasmania Rally’ on 23 November.
Spokesperson Roland Browne said:
We are calling on all Tasmanians – no matter their politics – to stand up for Tasmania’s future if they care about the cuts to jobs and services in health, education and housing that will be made to pay for the stadium; if they care about the new, increased taxes all Tasmanians will have to pay to fund the stadium; if they care about the destruction of Hobart’s unique cityscape and character, and the abandonment of due process and law that the stadium approval would signal
It’s extraordinary we’ve got to this point – all expert reports advise against the stadium. Treasury says Tasmania cannot afford it. And we still have no idea how much it will cost. We want Tasmanians to come together and demand parliament not be conned into signing a blank cheque drawn on Tasmania’s future.”
Joining Mr Browne in announcing the Rally will be Richard Flanagan.
Mr Flanagan said:
“We need the biggest turn-out possible to make the point that the stadium must be stopped if Tasmania is to have a future. This is about our jobs, this is about our health and about our kids’ education, our democracy and our economic future. The stadium is already almost 5 times the cost of Donald Trump’s White House ball room, more destructive, more stupid and more damaging to people’s everyday lives. But even Trump didn’t ask the taxpayers to pay for his folly. It’s time to call the AFL’s bluff. The Devils team is here to stay, but not at the price of our future or Jeremy Rockliff’s ballroom.”
