On 6 December 2022, in accordance with section 6(2)(a) of the Public Accounts Committee Act 1970, the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Public Accounts resolved to inquire into and report upon the Tasmanian Government’s process into the feasibility planning for a new sporting and event stadium in Hobart.
In November 2023, Our Place – Hobart made its submission to the Inquiry and was subsequently invited to speak to the Committee in support of that submission.
On Friday 21 June 2024, Roland Browne, Richard Flanagan, Shamus Mulcahy and Mat Hinds provided their in-person evidence to the Committee. Roland Browne introduced the delegation:
I represent Our Place, which is a group based in Hobart that is steadfastly opposed to the stadium at Macquarie Point.
Next, Richard Flanagan will speak. Richard is from a long-standing Tasmanian football family.
After Richard, Shamus Mulcahy will speak. Shamus is an architect with 25 years of experience and a current director of Bence Mulcahy, a local Tasmanian architecture practice. He comes to this Committee hearing with a wealth of knowledge about large-scale public projects built up by working for three years in the UK on projects relating to the London 2012 Olympics.
Lastly, Mat Hinds. Mat is a founding partner of Taylor and Hinds Architects, a nationally awarded architecture practice based in Tasmania that was formed in 2011. The practice focuses on residential, educational and cultural projects of all scales.
