1,700 Tasmanian jobs or the proposed Macquarie Point stadium? That was the choice before the Tasmanian Liberal Government in their latest budget. And they chose the AFL.
To highlight this fiasco, Our Place Hobart has a mobile billboard circulating the Hobart CBD and Greater Hobart area this week.
Our Place Hobart spokesperson, Mr Roland Browne, says,
“The Tasmanian Liberal Government chose the AFL, and a stadium ballooning in price, over Tasmanian jobs and essential services.”
“We still have no idea how much the proposed stadium will actually cost. With the issues in the Middle East, it’s expected to be much higher than $1.13 billion. What will the Tasmanian Liberals cut next to afford this vanity project?”
Mr Browne says that now is the time to renegotiate the Tasmanian Devils deal, as the teams face uncertainty over their future.
“The AFL holds the cards and we know the club presidents are worried*.”
“It’s time to renegotiate the deal. We can have the Tassie teams without a multi-billion dollar stadium. We must look after Tasmanian jobs and essential services first.”
