The government has misled the public by ignoring associated infrastructure costs like carparks, access roads, and fit-outs. Spending $60 million on consultants is an outrageous misuse of taxpayer funds. I’ll advocate to halt the Planning Commission process entirely. Instead of a vanity project, let’s invest in existing venues and redirect funding to essential services like hospitals, housing, education, and power affordability. Tasmania deserves accountability, smart priorities and good governance.

I want an AFL team. The AFL is a commercial entity, and like it or not, they can dictate terms. I believe It needs to be a roofed stadium near the centre of Hobart as the largest accommodation base. What a competitive advantage. If there was a viable alternate then that would be different. But realistically there is not. In years to come The Point will be as well known as the G. Plus the social benefit, maybe even get back test cricket due to weather surety.

Yes to the team, no to a stadium ruining the historical character of central Hobart (our key tourism drawcard) and the very significant unnecessary cost of building it right there. Renovate an existing stadium, or if necessary, build a new stadium where it will be cheaper to construct, fit better the scale of surrounding development and bring more benefit to its immediate community, who actually wants it there – listen to the people. Spend the saved hundreds of millions on healthcare. Open Macquarie Point to a locally appropriate, Hobart-scale, uniquely Tasmanian mixed-use development – create more business, more housing.
There has to be a better way
Because of the states parlous financial situation and the need for health and education system structural reform I cannot support the stadium. I have concerns around the transparency and accountability of the deal. I await the final report and findings from the correct POSS process.
