Vica Bayley (Deputy Greens Leader and Member for Clark) and Kristie Johnston (Independent Member for Clark) have joined Our Place Hobart in calling out the Rockliff Government’s decision to cut 1,700 public service jobs while pressing ahead with the proposed Macquarie Point stadium.
Our Place launched a mobile billboard circulating the Hobart CBD and suburbs this week, and the two MPs said they were proud to support it.
With $1.5 billion being cut from government services over four years, and the stadium’s costs expected to blow well past $1.13 billion, communities across Tasmania are demanding better.
Our Place Hobart spokesperson Roland Browne said the Government’s priorities were clear.
“The Tasmanian Liberal Government chose the AFL, and a stadium ballooning in price, over Tasmanian jobs and essential services. We still have no idea how much the proposed stadium will actually cost. What will the Tasmanian Liberals cut next to afford this vanity project?”
Greens MP Vica Bayley said the Government had serious questions to answer.
“The Greens will continue to scrutinise the Liberals’ budget choices and the stadium project in Budget Estimates next week. We’re looking forward to hearing the Liberal Government’s response to concerns raised over contractors accepted for the stadium tender and Treasury’s warnings about the extensive risks the project poses to Tasmania’s finances.”
